Bad news first. Cholera has broken out at the refugee camp where many of the Virunga NP Rangers and their families are staying. This is a very bad thing. There are hundreds of people in the camp currently and that number is unlikely to shrink anytime soon. Disease tends to spread rapidly throughout such camps.
Good news now. More attention is being given to the North Kivu fighting. NPR ran a story regarding fighting in Goma last night. Western diplomats are also starting to show up. I have no idea what good they will do, but at least they’re looking at the problem.
Also, a few more rangers and their families have stumbled out of the forest and are now relatively safe. Thank goodness for that!!

If anyone knows of any other sources that are covering this, let me know! The Virunga NP blog is very handy, because they are in the middle of it all. Unfiltered information, I assume.
